چکیده

The arena of investigation of star formation and its scaling laws is slowly, but consistently, shifting from the realm of luminous galaxies to that of faint ones and to sub–galactic regions, as existing and new facilities enable investigators to probe regions of the combined parameter space of surface brightness, wavelength, and angular resolution that were inaccessible until a few years ago. We summarize what has been accomplished, and what remain as challenges in the field of galactic–scale star formation. Subject headings: Galaxies; ISM

Implications for the formation of star clusters from extra-galactic star-formation rates

Observations indicate that young massive star clusters in spiral and dwarf galaxies follow a relation between luminosity of the brightest young cluster and the star-formation rate (SFR) of the host galaxy, in the sense that higher SFRs lead to the formation of brighter clusters. Assuming that the empirical relation between maximum cluster luminosity and SFR reflects an underlying similar relati...

HST Pa Survey of the Galactic Center – Searching the missing young stellar populations within the Galactic Center

We present preliminary results of our HST Paα survey of the Galactic Center (GC), which maps the central 0.65×0.25 degrees around Sgr A*. This survey provides us with a more complete inventory of massive stars within the GC, compared to previous observations. We find 157 Paα emitting sources, which are evolved massive stars. Half of them are located outside of three young massive star clusters ...

Density Structure of the Interstellar Medium and the Star Formation Rate in Galactic Disks

The probability distribution functions (PDF) of density of the interstellar medium (ISM) in galactic disks and global star formation rate are discussed. Three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations show that the PDFs in globally stable, inhomogeneous ISM in galactic disks are well fitted by a single lognormal function over a wide density range. The dispersion of the log-normal PDF (LN-PDF) is lar...

Fuelling Active Galactic Nuclei

We suggest that most nearby active galactic nuclei are fed by a series of small– scale, randomly–oriented accretion events. Outside a certain radius these events promote rapid star formation, while within it they fuel the supermassive black hole. We show that the events have a characteristic time evolution. This picture agrees with several observational facts. The expected luminosity function i...

The impact of radio feedback from active galactic nuclei in cosmological simulations: Formation of disk galaxies

In this paper, we present a new implementation of feedback due to active galactic nuclei (AGN) in cosmological simulations of galaxy formation. We assume that a fraction of jet energy, which is generated by an AGN, is transferred to the surrounding gas as thermal energy. Combining a theoretical model of mass accretion onto black holes with a multiphase description of star-forming gas, we self-c...
